The MMD Group welcomes MEP Peter Agius

25 November 2024

The MMD Group is delighted to welcome Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Peter Agius (EPP, Malta) as a new member. MEP Peter Agius was elected in June 2024 and serves as a member of Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO), Committee on Petitions (PETI) and substitute of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI).

Before his election, MEP Peter Agius was actively engaged in politics at national level, including in diabetes. He was involved in several national campaigns, calling for stronger action to improve diabetes prevention, management and care.

In November, MEP Peter Agius was the host of IDF Europe’s breakfast event, “Re-thinking Health in the EU for Improved Access to Quality Diabetes Prevention and Management”, held at the European Parliament. Reflecting on this event in an interview with the Times of Malta, MEP Peter Agius outlined his priorities for diabetes during the new mandate. These include ensuring equitable access to continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) for all people living with diabetes (PwD), regardless of age. Reflecting on the challenges posed by diabetes, MEP Peter Agius also underscored the urgent need for increased action on, and investment in, diabetes prevention and management in order to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and alleviate its burden on healthcare systems. He further emphasised that such measures not only enhance long-term health outcomes but also offer substantial cost-saving opportunities. We are delighted to count such a dedicated diabetes champion as MEP Peter Agius among our MMD members. We look forward to collaborating with him to drive EU health policies that address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, while stregthening the resilience and sustainability of healthcare systems across Europe.
