The MMD Group welcomes MEP Marta Temido (S&D, Portugal)

5 March 2025

The MMD Group is delighted to welcome Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Marta Temido (S&D, Portugal) as a new member. MEP Temido serves as the Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI). She is a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), the Committee on the Environment, Climate and Food Safety (ENVI), the Delegation for relations with Israel (D-IL), and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (DMED). She is also a substitute member of the Committee on Public Health (SANT), the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI), the Delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly (DACP), and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Africa-EU partnership (DAFR).

Before being elected as a Member of the European Parliament, Marta Temido served as the Minister of Health of Portugal from October 2018 to August 2022. With a background in healthcare studies, she holds a degree in law from the University of Coimbra, a Master’s in Health Economics and Management from the same university, and a PhD in International Health from NOVA University Lisbon. She also completed studies in hospital administration at the National School of Public Health at NOVA University Lisbon.

Building on this expertise, MEP Temido is continuing her work to improve public health at the EU level, mainly through her position within the Committee on Public Health (SANT) and the Committee on the Environment, Climate and Food Safety (ENVI).

One of MEP Marta Temido’s key priorities is access to care, ensuring that all citizens – including people living with diabetes (PwD) – have access to timely diagnosis, innovative technologies, essential medicines, and quality healthcare services.

Effective diabetes management is crucial to preventing the onset of life-threatening complications, reducing hospitalisations, and improving the quality of life for millions of PwD across Europe. However, disparities in access to care persist, adversely affecting health outcomes and placing an additional burden on healthcare systems. Strengthening policies that promote equitable access to treatment, integrated care pathways, and patient-centred healthcare services will not only help prevent severe diabetes-related complications and reduce the prevalence of NCDs, but also enhance the sustainability, resilience and efficiency of healthcare systems across the EU.

We look forward to working with MEP Temido to improve access to care, enhance diabetes management, and ensure that all citizens receive the support they need to lead healthier lives.
